Inline
Hockey:
Inline Hockey is the world's fastest growing sport, being
played in over 37 different countries world wide. It has
also been proposed to become the next Olympic Sport in the
2008 Olympics.
It is best described as "Non contact Ice Hockey on
Inline blades". Since the American Blockbuster "Mighty
Ducks" the sport of Hockey has experienced an unprecedented
growth pattern worldwide.
Begging in Australia in 1990 at car park on Chapel Street,
since then Australia has become hooked. It is often referred
to as Ice Hockey's little brother but although Inline is
quite similar to Ice Hockey it has many differences. The
main difference is with Inline Hockey there is no boarding
or body checking permitted. This makes the injury factor
very low, in fact, one of the sports with the lowest reported
injuries. People who don't show a lot of interest in traditional
sports like football and cricket often try Hockey and get
hooked straight away. It's known in Hockey circles as "The
Hockey Bug".
Nike Sporting Manufactures recently predicted Inline Hockey
to be the world’s largest sport by the year 2006;
presently the biggest is Soccer. Nike believed so strongly
in this prediction that it has since begun manufacturing
it’s own range of Inline Hockey equipment.
In America there is 2 million Inline Hockey Players a fair
achievement for 12 years. American Inline Hockey College
games are so popular that they can receive up to 70,000
spectators for a single game.
The Nike Inter-School Inline Hockey League:
The Inter-School Inline Hockey League (IIHL), an Initiative
of Roller Sports Victoria, is dedicated to the development
of Inline Hockey through schools. The IIHL is committed
to providing an affordable entry into the sport of Inline
Hockey to beginners and to give students who play Inline
Hockey, the same opportunities given to students who play
other school sports, by including Inline Hockey within the
school curriculum.
